Top Horse Races

Kentucky Derby – Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY

The Kentucky Derby is an annual Grade 1 stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses. This race represents the first leg of the Triple Crown of American horse racing. It takes place every year on the first Saturday of May, signaling the end of a two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival.

The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports

Nicknamed “The Run For The Roses”, the Kentucky Derby takes place on a dirt track and runs at a distance of 1 1/4 or 2 kilometers. The first ever running of the Kentucky Derby was won by a horse called Aristides in 1875.

The Kentucky Derby perennially draws the highest annual attendance of any North American horse race event every year. It’s also one of the busiest days of the year at the best horse racing sites as they take in tons of bets.

Preakness Stakes – Pimilico Race Course, Baltimore, MA

Two weeks after the annual Kentucky Derby, the horse racing world descends on the second leg of the annual Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes. The Preakness, is held on the third Saturday of every May and takes place on a dirt track over a distance of 1 and 3/16th miles.

The first ever Preakness Stakes race took place in 1873. It was named after a winning colt at Pimlico by a former Maryland governor. The Preakness Stakes has also been referred to as “The Run For The Black-Eyed Susans”. The winning horse is blanketed in a large array of yellow flowers that resemble Maryland’s state flower.

Belmont Stakes – Belmont Park, Elmont, NY

The third and final leg of the annual Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes. Sometimes referred to as “The Run For The Carnations”, the Belmont Stakes takes place every year on the first or second Saturday in June.

The third leg of the Triple Crown is run at a distance of 1.5 miles or 2.4 kilometers on a dirt track. Belmont Park, which is known as “The Championship Track”, is well regarded as one of the fairest racetracks in the world because of its wide, sweeping turns and its long home stretch.

A horse named Ruthless won the inaugural edition of the Belmont Stakes back in 1867. Meanwhile, the 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat owns the all-time record at the mile-and-a-half distance. While the Kentucky Derby still dominates the attendance numbers, the Belmont Stakes is another highly attended race.

In order to win the Triple Crown, a horse will need to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in the same calendar year.

Breeders Cup

The Breeders Cup Classic is the final race of the Breeders Cup World Championships, which is an annual series of Grade 1 Thoroughbred horse races. While the prizes for each of the 14 races that currently make up the series all pay out at least $1 million in total prize money, the Breeders Cup Classic is the biggest of them all with $6 million in prize money handed out.

Unlike the races that make up the annual Triple Crown, the Breeders Cup takes place on different sites every year. All of the tracks that have hosted the Breeders Cup are based in the United States with the exception of Woodbine Racetrack just north of Toronto, Canada, which hosted the event in 1996.

Since the venue changes on an annual basis, the overall attendance numbers have varied depending on how many people the sites have held. For the most part, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes are the only races that consistently outdraw the Breeders Cup in attendance numbers.

How To Read Horse Racing Odds

When you’re looking at horse betting lines at some of the best online horse racing betting sites, there are three main ways you’ll see them: fractional odds, American and decimal odds.

  1. Fractional Odds. The first type of horse racing odds you’ll see at online horse racing wagering sites are fractional. Fractional odds are usually fairly easy to read.
For example, if a horse is listed at 4/1 odds to win then that means if you bet the horse and it wins you will be paid out 4 times the amount of money that you bet. Therefore if you put $100 on a horse to win a race at 4/1 odds, then you will be paid out $400 if that horse wins.
Some fractional odds that are more difficult to read then others, such as if a horse is listed at 7/2 or 9/4 odds to win. The easiest way to break down those lines is to consider each number a unit.
For example, if $100 represents a unit and you bet a horse that is listed at 7/2 odds, you’d need to risk $200 in order to win $700. We can break that number down by dividing the risk in half. If we risked $100 on the horse listed at 7/2 odds, then we would win $350 when our horse comes out on top.
  2. American Odds. With American odds, you’ll see prices for horses that look like -110, +900 and +3000. The first thing you want to note is the sign in front of the odds.
If it’s a minus sign, then then number that follows it indicates how much you bet to win $100. In other words, -110 means a $110 bet would pay $100 if it won.
As for the plus sign, that tells you how much you’ll win if you bet $100. So +900 means you’d win $900 for a winning bet.
Most sites for horse racing in Canada will use the American odds.
  3. Decimal Odds. Decimal odds is another way that you might see horse racing lines listed. An example of decimal odds would be if a horse is listed at 5.00 to win a race. In this situation, the stake is already factored in to the price of betting the horse.
So if you bet $100 on a horse that is listed at 5.00 odds, then you’ll get $500 (100 x 5.00) if that horse wins. Decimal odds are very easy to read.
All the top horse racing betting sites we recommend will have an option to see their horse racing odds listed in either fractional or decimal depending on your preference.

Types Of Horse Racing Bets

If you’ve been wondering how to bet on horse races, we’ll run you through some of the most popular types of bets you’ll encounter:

  • Win. The first and most obvious option for horse races is picking an outright winner. Simply review the field, predict which horse will win and place a bet.
  • Place. Another option for betting on horse races is to pick a horse to place. This means that the horse needs to finish first or second in the race. While the odds take a slight hit since you are betting on the horse to either win or be the runner-up, you still get good value since the horse could now finish second and you still win.
  • Show. The third option is to pick a horse to show. This means you are betting on the horse to finish first, second or third in a race.
  • Matchups. While win, place and show bets are fairly straight forward they aren’t the option sports betting options available. Matchups are another popular option. The sportsbooks will match up different tandems based on expected outcomes. When you bet on matchups, you are simply betting on one horse to finish ahead of the other.
  • Accumulators. Accumulators are any bet in which you bet on multiple winners on the same ticket. You can get better odds by multiplying the number of picks on the same wager receipt. However, in order to win you need all of the picks on your ticket to win outright. If one of those horses loses, then you lose.
  • Quinella. A Quinella requires you to pick the two horses that will finish first and second in the race. With this wager, you don’t have to pick the correct order they will run, as long as you identify the top two finishers.
  • Exacta. The Exacta is similar to the Quinella in that you need to pick the top two finishers. However, with the Exacta you need to pick the correct order they will finish by identifying the winner and the runner-up. Since you need to pick the order they will run, you will get slightly better odds betting the Exacta.
  • Trifecta. The Trifecta requires you to select the horses that will finish first, second and third in a race. There are various different types of Trifectas, including one in which you pick the correct order they will run and another in which you pick the three horses without needing to pick the correct order they will place in.

3 Horse Racing Betting Tips

Know how to bet on horses? Our horse betting pros provide the best tips on betting horses for the new (and seasoned) bettor:

  1. Know the pedigree. It’s always important to take the time to explore the lineage of the horses competing in each and every race. After all, you can learn a lot about the potential of a horse by exploring their backgrounds. The majority of the most successful horses come from champion lineages. This is one of the keys to success for those wondering how to bet on horse racing.
  2. Take a look at the horse’s recent performance. The second thing to remember when betting on horse races is the importance of current form heading in to a race. While some winners genuinely do come out of nowhere, you can get a better idea of what to expect from horses by studying their recent results heading in to a given race.
  3. Who is the trainer? The final major factor worth considering is the trainer of the horses. Trainers have a substantial impact on the outcome of races. It’s so important that there are sites that keep track of trainer records. Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher are two trainers in particular that stand out as two of the top trainers of all-time. Make sure you review the trainer records before betting on the races.

What Is The Maximum/Minimum I Can Bet?

The Maximum/Minimum bet amounts depend on the site that you are using. You will need to reference the guidelines established by individual sites in order to know the maximum and minimum amounts you can bet on horse racing events.

A field entry is when several horses are grouped together as field horses in the same race. This is usually the case when a handful of obvious favorites are considered so highly above the other entries. In these situations, bettors can pick the “FIELD”. The majority of horse racing bets are graded within minutes following the race. Most sites will release their verdicts as soon as they have received confirmed results and payout information. It is rare for it to take longer than 20 or 30 minutes after a race for a site to pay out.
