NorthStar Bets Review
So far, most legal online sportsbooks in Ontario have been launched by foreign brands. Whether it’s American companies like BetMGM or FanDuel, or global bookies like bet365, we haven’t seen many homegrown operations.
This situation is slowly changing, though. First, there was Bet99, and now, NorthStar Bets has made its debut. Operated by NordStar Capital (who owns the Toronto Star and other assets), NorthStar Bets is 100% Ontario-owned.
But while they’re wholly Canadian, there are doubts. Do they offer the same selection of betting markets, odds, and promotions as the bigger brands? Below, we’ll do a blow-by-blow comparison of NorthStar vs. their competition.
NorthStar Bets Sportsbook Review
For an unknown brand, NorthStar Bets appears to deliver the goods. Let’s start with their betting dashboard, as it offers a clean, uncluttered experience. Unlike other sites, NorthStar doesn’t overwhelm you with dozen different games. Instead, it lists featured matchups, with other sports neatly hidden behind tabbed menus.
In the left sidebar, you’ll find a surprising array of betting markets . As a newcomer to sports betting, you’d forgive NorthStar for having a limited selection. However, they offer markets that some competitors lack, like lacrosse, eSports, and netball.

NorthStar Bets Betting App
As of June 2022, NorthStar Bets accepts wagers from Ontarians. Here’s what we like/dislike about it.
Pros & Cons of the App
NorthStar Bets is off to a great start for a new sportsbook. The user experience is excellent, as their betting dashboard is easy to navigate. Throw in dozens of sports markets and casino game integration, and this site has the right stuff to be an industry leader with brands like BetMGM Sportsbook and theScore Bet.
However, NorthStar Bets’s lack of industry experience is concerning. Their thin FAQ section and the lack of a mobile app may be a sign of this, but overall, we’re impressed by their performance thus far.
How to Download
Unfortunately, the NorthStar Bets mobile app isn’t available yet. However, bettors can still access this sportsbook via mobile browser. While their mobile site could use some fine-tuning, you shouldn’t have trouble placing bets on the go.
When the NorthStar Bets mobile app becomes available, we’ll post step-by-step download instructions in this section.
Sports Markets Offered by NorthStar Bets
Of all the “pros” in NorthStar Bets’s favour, offering more than 30 sports is their biggest. This feature is crucial for NorthStar’s success, as Ontario has a highly competitive sportsbook market. If a site has superior betting market selection, that’s a huge plus.
Naturally, you’ll find all the team sports that Ontarians love, like hockey, basketball, and football. But NorthStar goes beyond the call of duty, offering markets for sports like lacrosse, futsal, and snooker.
NorthStar Bets Odds
Odds are the bread and butter of sports betting. Casuals might not care about odds that deviate by a few points. But if you’re a seasoned veteran, unfavourable odds can make the difference between profit and loss.
So how do NorthStar’s odds compare to the competition? First, let’s look at some moneylines from the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
For Game 6 between the Rangers and the Penguins, NorthStar offered -129 for New York and +108 for Pittsburgh. Over on Pointsbet Sportsbook, it was -125 for the Rangers and +105 for the Pens. And on bet365, those odds were -125 and +105 again (respectively).
If you wanted to wager on the underdog Pens, you could squeeze out some extra points on NorthStar. It may not be much of a difference, but slightly longer odds can add up in your favour over the long term.
Betting Options / Bet Types
NorthStar offers its customers numerous betting options. Naturally, these include moneyline, point spread, and over/unders, but that’s just the beginning. Here are some of our favourites:
If you’ve wagered on sports with Proline, you already know what parlays are. But if you’re new to sports betting, this wager combines two or more individual wagers into one neat package.
As you can imagine, it’s tougher to win these bets. But when you do, you’ll earn a far greater profit than those from the average single wager.
This bet type lets you wager on events that will occur later. For example, you can wager on who will win the Stanley Cup, which player will win the Hart Trophy, and other far-off occurrences.
The odds for these bets are usually quite long, so do your homework before you lay down your cash. But if you’re confident in your prediction, futures can be highly profitable.
In-Game (Live) Betting
Pre-game wagers are so last decade – now, you can wager on games in progress. These “in-game” or “live” bets add another level of excitement to your sports betting experience.
If a team is down by two goals in the third period but has been putting up a good fight, you can wager on them to come back and win it all. Or if they’re winning (but you’re afraid they’ll choke), hedge your happiness and bet on the other team – don’t worry, we won’t tell your friends!
NorthStar Bets offers the following betting options:
- Spread Bets
- Prop Bets
- In-Play (Live) Betting
NorthStar Bets offers several banking options for deposits and withdrawals:
- Credit/Debit Cards (Visa/MasterCard)
- Bank Transfer
When you deposit on NorthStar Bets, funds will be available immediately. But when you submit a withdrawal request, be aware that it can take up to 3-5 business days to process.
Why? To protect customers (and themselves) from fraud, NorthStar needs to verify all withdrawals. While this can be a pain, this is a good thing – after all, you wouldn’t want your hard-earned cash falling into the wrong hands!
If you ever need to contact NorthStar Bets, you have a few options. But before reaching out, check out their FAQ. You can access this resource by scrolling to the bottom of NorthStar’s homepage and clicking on “Help Centre” in the footer.
Here, you’ll find answers to about a couple dozen common questions. But if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can get in touch with NorthStar’s customer service team.
You can reach them via live chat (but you have to be logged in first), phone at (855) 218-7827, or email at [email protected] We recommend contacting support in this order, as live chat typically has the fastest response times.
For a homegrown sportsbook, we’re impressed with NorthStar Bets. On this site, you’ll find an impressive selection of betting options and highly competitive odds. However, they have been growing pains. Their promotions could be better, and they only offer a handful of banking options.
