How to Play Craps
Craps is a simple game once you know how to play it. To get started, watch a video or stream of a game to see how the game progresses. Once you’re ready, concentrate on your own bets and don’t mind everything else happening on the table.
Step 1: Join a Table
Log into your favourite craps casino site and head to the game section. Browse the selection and pick either a live dealer, Craps, or a digital version where you play against the computer.
Once you’ve picked a game, join the table. If you’re playing against the computer, play slow and take breaks to check what to do next.
If you join a live Craps game, tell the dealer you’re new to the game and as them for help if needed.
Step 2: Place Your Bets
Tap or click on your screen’s Pass Line section. Then, choose your chip value and tap it to place it.
The Pass Line bet is a good place to start if you’re new to the game.
Step 3: Let the Dice Roll
If you’re playing against the computer, tap Roll or Shoot. If you’re playing a live casino game, the dealer will roll the dice.
If the come-out roll (results) is:
- 7 or 11: You win!
- 2, 3, or 12: You lose.
- Any other number: You’re still in the game. This number becomes the point.
Step 4: Point Phase
The game continues differently depending on what happened in the previous step. If the dealer rolled a point number, then you’re in this step.
Now, the dealer will roll the dice until they roll the point number or a 7.
For example, in step 3, the result of the dice roll was 5, which is now the point number.
The dealer rolls the dice until one of these happens:
- Rolls 5: You win!
- Rolls 7: You lose.
- Rolls anything else: Nothing happens, and the dealer rolls the dice again.
Step 5: New Round Starts
Whether you win or lose, it’s time to place your bet again.
Once you’re familiar with the basics, you can start placing different bets and playing strategically.
Craps Bets
To play Craps, you need to place a bet. Some bets can only be placed before the first dice roll, and some are available at any time. Also, a few bets are only active until the next dice roll.
- Pass Line: Best for new players. 7 or 11 are wins on the first roll, and you lose if it’s 2, 3, or 12. Any other number starts the Point Phase.
- Don’t Pass: Opposite of Pass Line. You win if the first roll is 2, 3, and tie if it’s 12, lose if it’s 7 or 11. Any other number starts the Point Phase. You get your money back if you get 12 (or push).
- Odds Bets: You can place this bet behind a Pass/Don’t Pass bet after a point has been set and it’s added on top of your Pass or Don’t Pass bet. The amount you can bet depends on the game version and table, but it’s usually 1x to 5x.
- Come Bet: You can place this bet after the first dice roll. This bet is like the Pass Line bet; you get your personal “point number” based on the next roll.
- Don’t Come Bet: Like the Come Bet, this is the Don’t Pass bet you can place after the first dice roll.
- Place Bets: You can place a bet on a specific number to be rolled before a 7. The available numbers are 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. You can add and remove these bets anytime.
- Field Bet: This bet applies to only the next dice roll. Place your chip on the Field section, and if the next roll is 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12, you win.
- Proposition Bets: These bets are high-risk, high reward, and apply to the next dice roll. Depending on what bet you choose, the payout varies between 7:1 to 4:1.
- Big 6 and Big 8: If 6 or 8 is rolled before 7, you win. But if you’re going to do this, it’s better to bet on the specific number (Place Bets) instead since the payout is much higher, 1:1 vs. 7:6.
Craps Table Layout
The Craps table can look overwhelming at first glance. But if you break the layout into sections and focus on one or a couple in the beginning, you can easily familiarize yourself with the whole table.
There are two popular ways to display the game: Preposition Bets in the middle, with mirrored side sections OR one side section in the middle with the Preposition Bets on the right side.
- The borders: Pass Line and Don’t Pass. You can please these bet types into these sections.
- The middle: Come and Don’t Come. You can easily identify the Come section since it’s usually displayed with capital letters. The Don’t Come (Bar) section is smaller, but it’s right above the Pass Line.
- The middle: Field. You can spot this section easily as it’s marked with capitalized FIELD and numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12.
- The middle or on the side: Preposition Bets. This section is often marked with its name and has images of different die faces and combos.
- The top: Place Bets. On the top of the table, you can place bets on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. These are usually numbered six and nine, written with letters.
- The corners: Big 6 and Big 8. On the table, this section usually looks like this: 6BIG8.
Online Craps Strategies
Once you’ve mastered all the bet types and understand how the game works, it’s time to be strategic. Craps has a low house edge, and there are limited outcomes, so as long as the dice throws are genuine, you’ve got a chance to win.
Pass Line + Odds Strategy (Beginner friendly)
Bet on Pass Line, and if there’s a point bet, add an Odds Bet behind it.
This is an excellent beginner strategy because Odds Bets have no house edge and are simple to use. For example, bet $5 on Pass Line. The dealer rolls 6, and a point is set. Take a $5 Odds Bet behind it. If a 6 is rolled again, you win both bets.
Come Bet + Odds
Once you’ve started placing the above bets, add a Come Bet to the next roll.
And if you get a personal point, take Odds on it, too. In total, you have 4 bets going at the same time. The best part is that the house edge is still very low.
Place Bet 6 and 8
Skip the Pass Line and take a Place Bet on 6 and/or 8.
The idea here is that 6 and 8 come up quite often, so it makes sense to bet on them. But you don’t want to use the Big 6 and Big 8 bets because those have bad payouts. Place Bets have a 7:6 payout, so once you hit it, you win big.

Free Craps Online
If you want to see what the online craps games are about before playing craps online for real money, you can try demo mode on Wildz Casino. This is a great way to master the different bets and strategies before you venture into the actual casino game and spend your money.
Playing on Mobile
Online gambling on a mobile device has become one of the most popular gaming methods. In addition to convenience, mobile app gambling lets users play wherever they want to on their mobile device. A game of craps is probably not the best table game on your phone, as the wide variety of info on the table doesn’t translate easily to the small screen.
However, you can find the game for mobile devices on the mobile casinos we recommend. In addition, downloading casino apps from the App Store or the Google Play Store takes only a few minutes.
Live Craps Online
Live dealer games have expanded to several games you can find on any gambling site, and now you can play live dealer craps games too. Evolution Gaming has recently introduced a live table through their First Person Craps. Several major Canadian casino operators have this game, which lets you switch from a software game to a live one when you choose to. Going live is fun for engaging with other players and the dealer.
An honourable mention goes to Wheelz Casino, which hosts two kinds of Craps: First Person and Live Craps. Since the face of this online casino is David Hasselhoff (The Hoff), the casino site had to include his favourite game in their library. While Hoff enjoys Roulette, his number one casino game is Craps. He told the team at Wheelz, “I used to play a lot of roulette, but that Craps was something.” So, if you want to gamble like the legendary Baywatch hero, you know where to go.
Other Live Casino Games
Online Craps is one of the best table games in Canadian online casinos. However, if you want to try something new, give live dealer games a chance. Live Roulette Casinos and live Baccarat Casinos and good alternatives to try. Both games are a staple part of brick-and-mortar casinos and are super interactive. And, of course, if you want to try something completely new, join a game of Monopoly Live!
