Alberta's regulated online casino and sports betting framework is set to debut on July 13, 2026, with several licensed operators now allowing players to pre-register ahead of launch day.

By pre-registering, Albertans can explore various markets, features and other key functions available with operators certified by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).

Crucially, any individual who registers before July 13 will gain immediate access to their chosen sportsbook and/or casino as soon as wagers go live.

BetMGM joins industry rivals in welcoming players early

Online casino and sportsbook platform, BetMGM, has become the latest gambling operator to accept early player registrations.

The US-based operator confirmed that early registrants will access BetMGM's range of services immediately at launch - including sports betting, RNG-powered casino games and live dealer rooms.

To celebrate its imminent live-date, the operator also unveiled a free-to-enter sweepstakes-style NHL giveaway, where participants could win exclusive tickets to a game of their choosing during the 2026/27 season.

In a public statement, BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt touched on some of the benefits soon to be experienced by Albertan players: "Alberta players can enjoy legendary experiences as well as the same product strength, responsible gambling leadership, and MGM-powered rewards that fueled BetMGM's growth in Ontario.

"Alberta represents a significant opportunity to drive meaningful impact as we build on our momentum across North America."

For BetMGM, the upcoming entry to Alberta's regulated market represents a rare expansion opportunity; the brand has not scaled its global presence since entering Ontario in 2022.

Entertainment deal vital to BetMGM in Alberta

BetMGM plans to deepen its Albertan ties beyond traditional online and casino infrastructure. The brand has agreed a partnership with local entertainment firm, Corus, to extend coverage throughout television, radio, podcasts and streaming ecosystems.

Moreover, the gambling outlet is seeking to pull data from Corus Consumer Insights to create "high-impact, culturally relevant activations such as co-branded contests and exclusive Las Vegas experiences."

Corus Entertainment Senior Vice President for Media Sales and Solutions, Christopher Mercer, detailed how his team's collaboration with BetMGM could positively influence growth for both entities:

"This partnership with BetMGM highlights the strength of Corus Entertainment's trusted brands and deep audience connections across our local markets. By combining the broad reach of our radio stations, digital properties, streaming platforms and podcast network, we're creating new ways for brands to engage consumers through relevant content, premium experiences and innovative advertising solutions, bringing BetMGM closer to audiences in authentic and impactful ways."

Other operators offering early registration

BetMGM stands as one of numerous soon-to-launch operators currently welcoming new Albertan players before July 13, with six industry competitors also onboarding customers early.

In February, Pointsbet became the first platform to accept pre-launch registrations - promising an 'exclusive welcome offer' to all players who sign up with the Australian-headquartered sportsbook and online casino.

That same month, BetRivers initiated a preregistration campaign of its own, leveraging momentum derived from a CBC/Radio Canada Winter Olympics sponsorship deal. At the time of the operator's announcement, Canadians could partake in a free-to-play trivia game based on Olympics history.

At the end of February, theScore Bet lifted the lid on pre-registration, promising to award a $50 bonus bet and $25 in casino credit to anyone who signs up.

By March, Caesars Sportsbook & Casino had begun rolling out a pre-registration cycle. While there was no mention of a platform-exclusive welcome offer outlined by the operator, those aged 21 and above would be guaranteed to receive notifications about launch plans before anyone else.

In mid-April, DraftKings revealed an intention to serve Albertans from July 13, verifying that the region would stand as its second regulated Canadian venture and its 34th North American jurisdiction. Although AGLC certification did not arrive until May, DraftKings took registrations from Alberta-based users from April 16.

But Alberta's latest entry, FanDuel, has taken a particularly bold approach in preparation for this summer's industry activation.

FanDuel to provide "special" promotions for preregistered users

The most recent iGaming and sportsbook operator to accept early registrations in Alberta comes in the form of FanDuel, which gained AGLC approval in June.

Those who join FanDuel before July 13 will be able to navigate sportsbook and casino accoutrements, explore responsible gambling tools and receive relevant marketing information.

Perhaps most notable is this: FanDuel users can claim 'special' rewards across multiple channels.

First, FanDuel customers who preregister may refer friends to receive rewards at launch.

Second, early platform adopters are encouraged to return to the operator's website for promotions "dropping before July 13" - suggesting that possible bonuses could be on the cards for players who create a FanDuel account before that date.

Preregistered players to help generate $76M in first year

Industry-wide preregistration follows years of Alberta tolerating a 'grey' gambling market.

Many brands entering the province's licensed industry have already formed a presence within the region through unregulated operations, with bet365 being one notable entity whose market penetration began long in advance of this summer.

In a Government-led bid to shift "towards a safer, regulated iGaming market," operators are being invited to retreat from the grey market in favour of gaining legal entry.

The move follows a damning Government survey, which revealed that around 70% of all iGaming activity in Alberta is estimated to be controlled by unregulated platforms without new legal infrastructure.

That data culminated in this summer's manoeuver; Alberta had previously operated under a monopoly-style framework spearheaded by PlayAlberta.

Upwards of 30 operators have been licensed to process wagers in Alberta. Now, with 20% of all regulated gambling revenue being fed back into local government services, Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally has stated that the province will attract around $76M within its first year of licensing operators.

Attention now turns to July 13, when operators will discover whether pre-registration efforts have borne tangible returns from domestic customers who may have been wary of an uncertain - and now mostly eliminated - grey market.
